Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This Labor Day, as we remember the contributions of working people, the heroes of 9/11, and those who so honorably protect our freedom and security here and abroad, we join together to address the long-term health needs, ongoing medical monitoring, treatment and compensation for first responders and other workers suffering from the long-term effects of 9/11.

Please join the New York State AFL-CIO, the New York City Central Labor Council and the Building & Construction Trades Council for a rally on Saturday, September 8, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. at West Broadway between Vesey and Barclay Street, as we honor, support and respect the contributions and sacrifices of all workers.  Hundreds of our active and retired employees from all across this state will gather to voice their support of proposed federal legislation which contains three main criteria: it will provide ongoing medical monitoring, treatment and compensation to workers and others adversely affected by the September 11th attacks.

Please allow this correspondence to serve as an invitation to join us at our rally, and to show your support for those we honor.

It would be our privilege to have you participate in this most worthwhile and important event.  Please respond to Suzy Ballantyne, Assistant to the President for Governmental Affairs, NYS AFL-CIO by completing the attached response form and faxing it to: 518-436-6901 or call 518-436-8516 ext. 240, sballantyne1@aol.com.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, September 8, 2007.

Sincerely,

Denis M. Hughes

Ethically Speaking...Introducing a new monthly segment written by Chalmers Clark, PhD, focusing on ethical considerations in conversations about our work and positive values that organized labor strengthens in American society.

Whenever I teach ethics, straight away I have to admit I’m not going to teach folks the last word about what is right and wrong.  I encourage students to recognize a crucial difference between memorizing a set of ethical rules, and learning to think about a problem or question ethically.  In the first instance, we might call it a “rules and regs” approach.  The second approach involves more in the way of a process; the process of making ethical judgments.  Our emphasis, in Ethically Speaking, will take heed of moral rules but  will also emphasize the meaning of ethical thinking as a thought process. Unemployment Resources

If you're out of work, you're not alone. In December, 2009, the unemployment in the United States remained at 10 percent, while in New York State it climbed to 9 percent. America's working families deserve better.
